(Warning: This article contains spoilers for Farmer Season 1.)

Farmersuper producer Taylor Sheridan’s oil industry drama, ended its first season in January. While Paramount+ hasn’t officially renewed the hit series for Season 2, we fully expect it to return, especially since the end of Season 1 left everything unresolved.

The season finale left our Michelob Ultra-swigging, very imperfect hero Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) in several pickles he’ll have to get out of in Season 2. After the death of his boss, Monty Miller (Jon Hamm), from a heart attack, Tommy now president of M-Tex Oil, a job he didn’t want. He has to close negotiations on an exploratory drilling deal that Monty was making that will bankrupt the company if it doesn’t work out, and he has to do it with Rebecca (Kayla Wallace), a lawyer he doesn’t trust to.

On top of that, he has to deal with the drug cartel that moves the product across M-Tex’s country. Gallino (Andy Garcia) – Tommy’s new, lovably menacing point of contact – wants his new “friend” Tommy to help him get the cartel into the oil business, and it’s going to be a huge headache for Tommy to manage the relationship that isn’t completely with consent.

Additionally, Tommy’s (ex)wife Angela (Ali Larter) is high maintenance, his daughter Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) is a handful, and his son Cooper (Jacob Lofland) is in a physically and emotionally dangerous relationship with Ariana (Paulina Chávez), the grieving widow of his dead oilfield colleague.

Tommy has a lot on his plate – french fries and mashed potatoes, you might say — and he’s sure to have even more problems added to his pile when Farmer returns. Here’s everything we know so far about a potential season 2.

Hair Farmer been renewed for season 2?

Paramount+ has not officially ordered a second season yet. But the streaming service says the show is its most viewed original to date, a claim supported by its high ranking on Nielsen streaming chart. Paramount has yet to cancel any of Sheridan’s shows, and that seems safe to assume Farmer won’t be the first.

In fact, while Paramount+ hasn’t announced anything yet, a second season may already be in the works. In May 2024, months before Season 1 premiered, Farmer Star Demi Moore said so Deadline that she expected to begin filming season 2 in early 2025. “I’ve already finished the first season and I’m excited for us to start the second, which will be at the beginning of next year,” she said. Again, nothing has been officially, publicly confirmed yet, but we’re 99% sure Farmer Season 2 will happen.

Farmer Season 2 premiere date prediction

It is difficult to predict premiere dates for Taylor Sheridan shows. There are so many factors at play — A-list actors’ schedules, the weather, Sheridan’s mercurial creative process — that it’s easier to just say you’ll see it when it’s ready. But if Farmer goes into production again in early 2025, the break between seasons will not be very long. Lionessanother of Sheridan’s Paramount+ shows, arguably an even more complex production than Farmeronly took 15 months between seasons 1 and 2, even with writer and actor strikes in 2023. So if Demi Moore is right, we’d expect to see Farmer Season 2 in late 2025 or early 2026.

Farmer Season 2 cast

Most of the Season 1 cast would likely return for Season 2, including:

  • Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris, a country manager at M-Tex Oil whose life is one crisis after another.
  • Demi Moore as Cami Miller, Tommy’s friend and the widow of his boss, Monty.
  • Ali Larter as Angela Norris, Tommy’s ex-wife with whom he has rekindled a relationship.
  • Michelle Randolph as Ainsley Norris, Tommy and Angela’s daughter who is supposedly in high school and dreams of marrying an NFL quarterback.
  • Jacob Lofland as Cooper Norris, Tommy and Angela’s son, who plans to start his own oil company to support Ariana.
  • Kayla Wallace as Rebecca Savage, a shark of a lawyer whom Monty put in charge of M-Tex with Tommy.
  • James Jordan as Dale Bradley, a petroleum engineer who manages roughnecks and is Tommy’s roommate.
  • Paulina Chavez as Ariana Medina, a young widow who is about to fall in love with Cooper, but it is too soon after her husband’s death.
  • Colm Feore as Nathan, M-Tex’s general counsel and Tommy’s other roommate.
  • Mustafa speaks as Boss, an experienced roughneck.
  • Andy Garcia as Gallino, a high-ranking drug cartel member who wants to do business with Tommy

Jon Hamm only signed on for one season and will not be returning Farmer. It would be weird if he did since his character Monty died during open heart surgery. “You don’t come back from that,” Hamm said USA today. “He is no longer with us.”

Hamm also hinted that Demi Moore, who didn’t do much in Season 1, will have a much bigger role in Season 2. “It’s pretty cool that Taylor said to (Moore), ‘Trust me, I’ll take care of you, it will be worth the time.’ To put it mildly,” Hamm said. “Cami has so much room to grow and show who she really is. It’s going to be fascinating to watch.”

Farmer source material

Farmer is based on a Texas Monthly podcast called Boomtown. Boomtownwhich ran for 12 episodes between 2019 and 2020, features in-depth reporting on the oil industry in the Permian Basin, America’s most productive oil field. Boomtown was named one of the 50 best podcasts of 2020 by Atlantic Ocean.

Boomtown was reported, written and hosted by journalist Christian Wallacewho is a co-creator of Farmer along with Sheridan. Wallace has previously worked as a roughneck and as an editor at Texas Monthly.

He told Deadline that some of Farmer is “very accurate” about what it’s like to work in the oil and gas industry, while other elements were embellished for drama and to create compelling characters. “And it’s funny, it depends on who you ask,” he said. “My uncle, who has been working in the oil field for the last 30 years, will tease every little thing. But I think for the most part, you can safely say that you get a real sense of what it’s like to work with oil and gas out there.”
