Who Votes for NFL MVP?

The AP NFL MVP award is voted on by 50 media members. Individual votes are not published.

When does the NFL MVP vote?

The results are already ready. The MVP votes are collected at the end of the regular season, and the award does not take the playoffs into consideration. Allen and Jackson’s performances in their divisional round or throughout the postseason will have no bearing on the MVP voting.

How are MVP votes counted?

Voters are allowed to line up to give players on their ballots. How the votes are weighted:

  • First place: 10 points
  • Second place: 5 points
  • Third place: 3 points
  • Fourth place: 2 points
  • Fifth place: 1 point

This is the third season of the weighted voting system. Before then, each voter cast a first ballot.

Have they been co-MVPs before?

Yes, there have been ties resulting in co-MVP award recipients.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre and Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders were co-MVPs in 1993. Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning shared the award in 2003.
