Dr. Martin Luther King Day:

HOUSTON – For the second year in a row, Dr. Martin Luther King Day cold! Last year the parade was postponed. When we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s life and legacy, wins will make it feel like the upper 20s and 30s along the entire Parade route. While it’s cold Monday morning, parade-goers are missing the winter precipitation. We will begin tracking the threat of snow and ice Monday evening.

Cold parade, getting wet Monday night.

Winter storm warning in effect Monday evening:

Both long-range models, the US and European, show an area of low pressure east of southern Texas, bringing a wave of Gulf moisture into the very cold environment. The cold and moisture will lead to heavy and historic snow accumulations across SE Texas.

Monday evening to Tuesday

Areas of Harris County to the north and east could receive 4 to 6 inches of snow. As you head southeast into Matagorda, snow counts are closer to an inch.

Up to 6 inches across SE Texas

Timeline:

Monday at 18: Rain starts moving in from the coast and stays above freezing

Precipitation will begin as rain Monday evening.

Tuesday at 02:00: Rain turns to sleet overnight as temperatures drop to freezing

Rain turns to sleet

Tuesday at 6: By sunrise, most of SE Texas will begin to snow and that will continue throughout the morning with the potential for heavy bands to set up.

Sleet turns to snow

Tuesday at 12:00: We will track more ice and snow as the system slowly begins to move eastward.

Snow is widespread for SE Texas.

Tuesday at 18:00: The storm should clear SE Texas, but roads will remain snowy

Wednesday morning: Then we will track an extremely bitter cold morning after the rain, ice and snow moves through our area. Our low right now is 18, but with the wind chill it will be lower.

How to prepare:

It’s never too late to prepare! Bring your pets, pack your plants and move in. Pipes freeze when temperatures drop into the teens. Right now, I’m predicting mid-20s for Houston Tuesday morning. Cover exposed pipes and drain your sprinkler system. There is no harm in winterizing your system.

10-day weather forecast:
