While the vice president’s office is on the grounds of the White House, Vance’s official residence while serving as vice president is located at United States Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, according to the White House.

The 19th-century White House at Number One Observatory Circle, built in 1893, was originally intended for the superintendent of the USNO. While vice presidents and their families have historically lived in their own homes, the cost of securing these private residences has grown significantly over the years, according to the White House. In 1974, Congress agreed to renovate the Naval Observatory House as the Vice President’s home.

The vice president’s house is approximately 2.5 miles from the White House, per Google Maps.

“We love it. Our neighbors are great and some of our closest friends live within walking distance. We love the natural beauty, especially the old giant trees and the wildlife. It’s hard to believe we’re minutes away from downtown, but we see deer and wild turkeys every day, it’s the perfect combination of closeness to the city and nature,” Vance told the Enquirer in an email for a story about what he loves about his neighborhood.

Vance recently resigned as one of Ohio’s two senators before being sworn in on Inauguration Day.

DeWine’s appointees must run in that election if they want to keep the seat. Democrats will field a challenger for the general election, and there could be a GOP primary if other Republicans are interested.

The winner in 2026 would serve out the remainder of Vance’s term, which ends in 2028. That person can then run for re-election in 2028.
