But is Inauguration Day a federal holiday? Here’s what you need to know if you plan to run errands on Monday.

Is Inauguration Day a public holiday?

Inauguration Day is is not considered a federal holidaymeaning that businesses, delivery companies, federal and state courts and banks are not required to close on January 20 for the incoming president’s swearing-in.

But this year, Inauguration Day aligns with MLK Day.

What will be open, closed on Inauguration Day?

Although Inauguration Day is not a federal holiday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is, which will cause a change in some services.

All federal and state courts and non-essential services will be closed on Monday, and the major banks — Bank of America, Capital One, Citibank, PNC, Wells Fargo and Truist — consider MLK Day a holiday and will be closed.

All United States Postal Service locations will be closed on Monday. Normal post office hours and mail delivery will resume on Tuesday 21 January.

UPS will also be closed on Monday and will not deliver any packages.

However, FedEx will be open and will deliver packages as normally scheduled.

Since MLK Day falls on Inauguration Day this year, all non-essential government employees should have Monday off, and it is up to individual companies’ discretion whether to give workers MLK Day off, so check with your company’s policy.

Most shops and fast food restaurants will be open on Monday.
