I-10 reopens after alleged fatal shooting in Maryvale

PHOENIX (AZ family) – A portion of Interstate 10 is back open after a lengthy closure from an apparent shooting that left a man dead on the freeway in Maryvale Wednesday morning. The closure lasted most of the day, from about 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m

Phoenix police say the shooting happened in the westbound lanes of I-10 near the Loop 202 interchange. According to Phoenix Police Sgt. Brian Bower, two men got into an argument on the highway when one man shot at the other.

After the shooting, the injured driver crashed into the median and died.

Police say the other driver then left the highway and pulled into a nearby parking lot. Bower confirmed he is cooperating with officers and has been interviewed by detectives.

No passengers were in either vehicle and no one else was injured.

Several first responders could be seen just after 8 a.m. blocking the HOV and far left lanes of I-10 at 75th Avenue, and crews eventually shut down the entire westbound side.

Police say if you encounter any problems on the highway, call 911 and there is no excuse for this type of violence.

“There’s no need to shoot at individuals at any time, whether you’re on the highway or you’re just walking around the streets, especially at 8 o’clock in the morning when you have a lot of people around, it becomes even more of a dangerous time for anyone who can drive or community members just trying to get to work, trying to get to school,” Bowers said.

Phoenix Police are handling the investigation, while Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers are assisting.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department’s non-emergency line at 602-262-6151.
