Daniil Medvedev vs Learner Tien live score: Australian Open updates as Katie Boulter knocked out after Emma Raducanu issues injury update

Novak Djokovic is training for the Australian Open 2025 with Andy Murray as coach

The Australian Open continues as Emma Raducanu booked a clash with second seed Iga Swiatek, but Katie Boulter is out after a three-set defeat to Veronika Kudermetova.

British no. 1 Boulter failed to progress to the third round for the first time as Kudermetova faced close competition. Boulter looked to have found momentum but Kudermetova raised her level in the decider, winning 7-6 2-6 6-2.

Earlier, Raducanu defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-3 7-5 but struggled with several injury problems during the win. The 22-year-old played through pain battling her lower back, but Raducanu hopes it’s just a “little niggle” after her preparations for the tournament were disrupted by back spasms.

Five-time grand slam winner Swiatek needed just an hour to cruise through, setting up a magnificent match against Raducanu, who she is yet to drop a set against in three meetings.

Elsewhere, defending men’s champion Jannik Sinner dropped his first set since October against Australian wildcard Tristan Schoolkate, but world no. 1 recovered to win 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-3.

Last year’s runner-up Daniil Medvedev meets American qualifier Learner Tien, while Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca’s dream run on his grand slam debut is over after defeat to Lorenzo Sonego.

Teacher Tien passes a big moment to take a 3-2 lead in the third set.

The qualifier double-faulted to face a sticky 0-30, then had to save break point.

But he holds his nerve and finds a forehand winner past Medvedev to keep his nose in front.

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 6-7 1-1 Learner Ten*

A very rare, at least in this match, exchange between Tien and Medvedev.

The fifth seed walked off the court for as long as he could manage between sets.

Medvedev came through four five-set matches to reach the Australian Open final last year, including from two sets down against Emil Ruusuvuori.

If he is to survive this, Medvedev will have to play far and wide into the night again. It’s already past midnight in Melbourne.

Australian Open: SET! Daniil Medvedev 3-6 6-7 Teacher Ten

AMAZING! 19-year-old Learner Tien steers a forehand winner down the line to take a two-set lead over Daniil Medvedev!

What a story it could be. Tien, on his grand slam debut, leads the former World No 1 and US Open champion.

Medvedev is angry and clearly out of sorts. But Tien has stepped up the apartment and is on the verge of a big shock.

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 6-6 Learner Ten

This match is going to be very strange! Medvedev gets a double foot fault which costs him the point! Tien then puts away the winner and moves 4-2 ahead.

Medvedev is furious and goes straight to a linesman and says something to his face. But foot defects are measured electronically…

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 6-6 Learner Ten

Another break in serving! Medvedev hands on and Tien gets a little tight, especially on the overhead.

To the tiebreak we go. However, Ten’s level just seems to be higher and the American wins an epic 45-shot rally to take a 2-0 lead in the tiebreak!

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 5-6 Learner Ten*

Incredible from Learner Tien! He breaks Daniil Medvedev again and moves one game away from taking a two-set lead!

The lefty leans into a backhand and slams it into the lead to add to Medvedev’s frustration. His serve is slurred over and over again.

But Tien also finds it difficult to hold serve. Can he cross the line and take a big lead?

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 5-4 Learner Ten

Medvedev levels after another break of serve and then manages to hold for the first time in four games.

Medvedev should be able to get out of trouble in this match, but Tien seems to be a super player.

However, it always gets a little different when the qualifier or wildcard actually takes the lead against a top seed.

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 3-4 Learner Ten

Wow! The phenomenal Learner Tien breaks Daniil Medvedev for the third game in a row to take the lead in the second set!

The 19-year-old wins a brilliant exchange at the net and then produces a stunning backhand lob to leave Medvedev stranded.

Medvedev fires his racket and receives a code violation (although he basically skimmed it along the court to avoid hitting anyone).

But this is sensational from Learner Tien. A set and a break against the former world no. 1.

Daniil Medvedev is at it again.

Two days after requiring five sets to beat Thai wildcard Kasidit Samrej, ranked 418th in the world, Medvedev drops the opening set to American qualifier Learner Tien on Margaret Court Arena.

Tien, the World 121 and NextGen finalist, is only 19 years old and playing at a grand slam for the first time, but he takes the opening set 6-3 against three-time Australian Open finalist and former World No 1 Medvedev.

Medvedev was a break up in the second set, but Tien has just broken back for the second time in this set.
