Griezmann misses the penalty and Atletico’s record winning streak ends with a 1-0 loss at Leganes

BARCELONA, Spain — Antoine Griezmann missed a 90th-minute penalty and Atletico Madrid’s club record 15-game winning streak ended after a shock 1-0 defeat at Leganes in La Liga on Saturday.

Griezmann had a chance to at least grab a point for the league leaders when, after a video review, Atletico awarded a penalty for a handball by defender Sergio González. The French striker stroked his spot-kick wide.

Griezmann and Julián Alvarez hit the woodwork in the first half, but the leaders could not respond after Leganes defender Matija Nastasic scored with a header in the 49th minute.

Last week, Atletico broke their own record for consecutive wins, which stood at 13 in the 2012-13 season.

Atletico’s first defeat since October 27 left them a point ahead of Real Madrid, who host Las Palmas on Sunday. Barcelona were six points behind the front-runners before visiting Getafe on Saturday.

Leganes returned to the first division this season and have become a giant killer in the top flight. The modest club from Madrid surprised Barcelona when it was the leader in December.

Atletico defenders Javi Galán and Clement Lenglet both received their fifth yellow cards of the season and will miss the next round against Villarreal.
