How Much Snow to Expect in NY, NJ; Warning, state of emergency issued

The New York City area is expected to see significant snow Sunday afternoon from an upcoming winter storm from the south.

New Jersey has declared state of emergencyand the entire Tri-State area is under a Winter Storm Warning or Winter Weather Advisory due to the expected snowfall combined with dangerously cold air. Even after the storm, wind chills are expected to drop as low as -5 to -15 degrees.

Sunday morning: The storm will begin with a mix of snow and rain, with temperatures in the high 30s and wind chill values ​​in the 20s and 30s.

Sunday afternoon: A winter storm warning is in effect for the Lower Hudson Valley, interior northern New Jersey and most of interior Connecticut. A Winter Weather Advisory calls for action for the city, nearby New Jersey suburbs, Long Island and coastal Connecticut.

  • How fast does the snow fall? Highest snowfall amounts will be about half an inch to 1 inch per hour.

Winter Storm Warnings (FOX Weather)

Sunday evening: Temperatures in the city are expected to drop into the teens to 20s. Travel conditions are expected to be hazardous due to slippery travel. The snow is expected to continue overnight.

Early Monday morning: The winter storm warning and winter weather advisory ends at 04.00. Wind chill can be as low as 5 degrees.

Monday: Expect sunny skies with highs in the 20s before dipping into the teens. Expect wind chills as low as -5 to -15 degrees early Tuesday morning. Because of Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday has schools, banks and other services that would normally be in session on Monday a day off, which will help keep roads clear of snow removal crews.

Tuesday and Wednesday: Highs will linger in the teens, perhaps reaching 20 degrees. Expect wind chills between 0 and -10° Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning.

New York City and nearby suburbs can expect between 3 and 5 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service. Up to 6 inches is possible.

The Lower Hudson Valley, interior New Jersey and most of Connecticut will see totals between 5 and 8 inches. Eastern Long Island should get mostly a rain-snow mix.

If heavier bands of snow develop over the region, New York City could see up to 8 inches of snow, with 10 to 12 inches possible for the Lower Hudson Valley.

There is a 90% chance that NYC will see at least 3 inches of snow.

Polar vortex and sub-zero chills

This weekend and into next week, a lobe of the polar vortex will descend on the US, bringing brutally cold temperatures with it.

The FOX Forecast Center said temperatures will drop as much as 45 degrees below average in places, bringing temperatures below freezing in at least 20 states, from the Plains to the Great Lakes and Interior Northeast.

Preparations for the cold weather are already underway in New York City. According to New York City Emergency Management, a Cold Weather Alert has been issued and the New York City Department of Public Health declared a Cold Blue.

“Outreach teams will scour all five boroughs to connect our most vulnerable New Yorkers to shelters,” NYCEM said the X. “No one who is homeless seeking shelter in New York City under a Code Blue will be turned away.”
