Cold weather, chance of snow coming to Charlotte later this week

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – After a cold and wet start to the week, even colder temperatures and a chance for more snow are coming over the next few days.

  • Mid-week: Sunny and cold, 40s during the day, tweens/20s at night
  • Friday: First alert for winter storm: snow, ice and rain
  • Saturday: The storm will only move away in the morning

Dry, sunny and very cold weather will hold through Thursday with highs mainly in the 40s and lows in the teens and 20s.

There is a chance for some snow to come to the Charlotte area Friday through Saturday.

First Alerts are up late Friday and early Saturday as a new system – which has yet to be developed – tracks toward the Carolinas from the Gulf of Mexico. With cold air in place, model data suggests snow could start Friday afternoon before mixing with ice and maybe even rain.

What we get will largely depend on the track and strength of the storm and the temperature profile through the atmosphere. Often we see warmer air drifting in from the south over the surface and changing the snow into something else.

We will continue to fine-tune the forecast throughout the week and keep you updated on the latest. In the meantime, be prepared for the possibility of dangerous driving conditions if you plan to hit the road before the start of the weekend.

Whatever comes, it looks set to leave very early on Saturday morning, with sunshine quickly returning. Afternoon temperatures may struggle to get back to near 40 degrees Saturday afternoon with the mid-40s expected Sunday.
