First Alert NC snow | Winter storm could bring snow, sleet, freezing rain to central North Carolina by weekend

RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) — There is another chance for wintry weather by the end of the work week in central NC and we could even see our first measurable snow.

The ABC11 First Alert Weather Team is warning everyone of the possibility of wintry precipitation beginning Friday evening or night as light snow. It will change to sleet and frost during the night, and it will not rain until midday on Saturday.

The storm will start as snow Friday night and transition into a wintry mix before exiting the region by mid-to-late Saturday morning. The hardest part of the forecast will be about the location of the sleet and freezing rain, according to ABC11 meteorologists.

Who wants to see snow?

  • 2-4″ of snow in Person, Granville and Mecklenburg counties


  • 1-3” across most of central NC


  • Less than an inch for areas south of Pinehurst and Wilson

With this storm, power outages are possible Friday and Saturday, depending on ice accumulation, along with travel impacts.

Once the storm clears, Saturday afternoon will feature a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the low 40s.

Temperatures will drop into the 20s Saturday night, which will allow for icy patches to develop.

Black ice will be a major concern Saturday and Sunday night.

Weather forecast for the week

Wednesday: Sunny, still cold. High at 41; but feels like mid 30s.

Thursday: Sunny, cool breeze. High at 38 but will feel more like 30.

Friday: Cloudy and cold and a high temperature of 38.

First alarm: Friday night through Saturday: A winter storm will arrive late Friday night and stay with us through Saturday morning, then taper off Saturday afternoon. Most of the region will start briefly as snow and then quickly transition to a mix of sleet and/or freezing rain from the Triangle and areas north. Areas south of the triangle will see mostly (if not all) rain.

Sunday-Tuesday: Lots of sunshine with highs in the mid to upper 40s.
