ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1299 Hints, Clues and Answer for Wednesday, January 8th

Behold, we have come to Wordle #1300. 300 days ago we hit the big #1000. It will be another 700 days until we reach Wordle #2000 on December 10th, 2026. It feels like a long time from now, but it’s coming faster than you’d think, mark my words. I will be 45 years old. My oldest child will be 19 and my youngest will be 16. He needs a driver’s license. Crazy to think about.

Anyway, yesterday was Wordle Wednesday, which meant we had an extra puzzle to solve. Below you will find the answer.

This was the puzzle:

This thing consumes all;

Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;

Gnaws iron, bites steel;

Grinds hard stones into flour;

Kill the king, destroy the city,

And knocks down the mountain.

Literary folk will recognize this as one of the riddles from Bilbo and Gollum’s famous exchange. The answer is time.

Speaking of time, I’d say it’s time to solve this Wordle!

Word analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

Not only did I not pick all the best guesses today, it was just a really tricky Wordle. ROMAN left me with only 195 words, which isn’t terrible, but CRATE – which even Wordle Bot said was a wonderful guess – only cut it down to 37. And LAGER only got it down to 14. Ouch. SWIPE gave me three to choose from and luckily I was lucky. WAFER for the win!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get -1 point for guessing five, but it looks like the Wordle Bot was as stunned as I was today. The bot also took five attempts, so zero points for a tie. I’ll take it!

How to play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 point; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent, you get 1 point. If you stand straight, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or play for a new score every day.
  • Friday is 2XP, which means you double your points – positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running account or just play day by day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “wafer” comes from Old French wafers (12th century), which is itself derived from it Frankish or Old High German wafflemeaning “honeycomb” or “web”. This reflects the thin, lattice-like texture of the wafer. The term eventually transitioned into Middle English seam waferreferring to a thin, crispy cake. The connection to honeycomb or weaving accentuates the wafer’s light, patterned appearance.
