‘Severance’ season 2 arrives with 100% perfect critic scores

We’ve waited three long years for Severance Season 2, and according to critics, it was very much worth the wait.

Reviews are pouring in based on the first six episodes, and all 40 reviewers who have seen it have posted a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. Perhaps not the biggest shocker since Season 1 had a 97% with over a hundred critics reporting.

But it’s not just the overall score, it’s the nature of what critics are saying. This isn’t just “yeah, it’s pretty solid,” it’s effusive praise, as you can see from some of these quotes:

  • Black: “Whatever destination Severance aims for, the journey dramatizes the arbitrary rules and division of modern labor better than anything else in the air.”
  • New York Post: “In this day and age where too much entertainment feels “made by committee” or “made by algorithm,” this is a rare show that feels like a singular creative vision.”
  • Dextero: “Severance Season 2 is an astonishing achievement; a flawless display of craftsmanship, performance and tight, compulsive storytelling. Praise Kier.”

Even on Apple TV+, which has a much, much higher batting average of quality programming, especially in the sci-fi genre, than any other streaming service, Severance seems to be in a league of its own. These reviews are early and the actual release date for Season 2 is January 17th. Season 2 will be ten episodes, up from 9 in Season 1, and will air weekly without a binge release. Also without a double-episode premiere like we sometimes see with shows on Apple. I guess they really want to make it last as long as possible. Season 2 of Severance won’t end until the end of March.

Even though we’re eight days into 2025, it’s already being called one of the best series of 2025. We probably won’t have to wait quite that long for Season 3, since there was part of a pandemic between Season 1 and now, and whatever behind-the-scenes drama there was said to be regarding the show appears to have been settled.

We don’t know how long Severance plans to run. Writer Mohamad El Masi says the story has been “mapped out” fully, but he doesn’t know if it’s two seasons or six. Well, it’s not two and the show will be back at least for Season 3 despite no official announcement yet. Apple TV+ will no doubt let this show run as long as it needs to to finish that arc, and we won’t have to worry about an abrupt cancellation. See you in a week and a half.
