The daily pun is published by New York Timeswho bought the puzzle in early 2022 after it went viral in October 2021. It was originally created by Josh Wardle, a Welsh-born engineer who made it as a gift for his girlfriend who loved playing word puzzles.

“The game has become bigger than I ever imagined,” Wardle said in a statement after the sale Wordle to New York Times. “I’d be lying if I said this hasn’t been a little overwhelming. After all, I’m only one person.”

A large part of Wordle‘s appeal is its simplicity. Players must identify a five-letter mystery word using a process of elimination to find the answer.

Players are helped along by a color-coded system, with green indicating that the letter appears in the word; yellow, indicating that the letter is in the word but in the wrong place; and a gray tile means that the letter does not appear at all.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the noun is defined as “a thin crisp cake, candy, or biscuit” and “a sticky disk of dried paste with added coloring used as a seal.”

The transitive verb is defined as “to seal, close, or fasten with a wafer.”
