Massachusetts police departments warn of phone scams

Several Massachusetts police departments are warning people not to fall victim to a “smishing” scam.

According to police, there have been hundreds of reports of a text scam asking EZDrive Massachusetts customers to pay unpaid tolls.

The text suggests that people must pay a fee to fine an unpaid toll.

A “smishing” scam is the practice of stealing financial or personal information via text messages on mobile devices.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation says the EZDriveMA program will never request information from customers via text.

Police urge people not to share personal information over the phone, never answer unknown numbers, not click on hyperlinks and report and block numbers that seem suspicious.
