Arrest made after fatal stabbing at Denver’s 16th Street Mall

DENVER (KKTV) – A man has been arrested after a fatal stabbing along Denver’s 16th Street Mall over the weekend.

Two people were left dead and two others injured in what the Denver Police Department believes was a random series of attacks along the popular pedestrian mall.

Three of the stabbings happened in just 42 minutes on Saturday night, starting at 4 p.m. and Tremont at 5:12 p.m., when a man was slashed in the face. That was followed by another attack just five minutes later at 16th and California, where a woman was stabbed in the throat. At 5:54 p.m., police say a third victim was stabbed in the torso and arm at 16th and Lawrence Street. Each scene was only a few blocks from the previous scene.

On Sunday night, another stabbing was reported at 16th and Market streets, two blocks north of where the third stabbing occurred.

“We really have a lot of concern for the community because these appear to be unprovoked attacks,” Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said at a news conference Sunday night, just hours before announcing that a suspect was in custody.

Police on Sunday released surveillance of the suspect, describing him as a white man wearing a gray or dark green hooded jacket, black jeans and black Adidas shoes with white stripes. The police department distributed the photo to businesses on the mall, including hotels and nearby Coors Field, urging the public to be on the lookout for the assailant, who remains at large.

A few hours later, a fourth person was attacked.

Police confirmed late Sunday night that they arrested a man at the scene of the fourth stabbing and linked him to all of the stabbings.

The victim, who was killed Saturday, has been identified as an American Airlines flight attendant who was at the mall while on a layover. American Airlines released a statement to 11 News sister station CBS Denver on Sunday, saying the company was “devastated and mourning the tragic loss of our colleague who was the victim of a senseless crime last night.”

The other two victims Saturday night, both men, are expected to survive.

The victim in the fourth stabbing has not been identified,

Detectives have not found a connection between the suspect and the victims and have not determined a motive, although more information may come with the arrest.
