Woodlawn High was locked down after gun found on campus

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Woodlawn High School is on lockdown ‘out of an abundance of caution’.

Sources say a gun was found on campus Thursday, Jan. 16, and deputies are searching students’ backpacks. Officials tell WAFB the school has been on lockdown for about an hour.

No injuries have been reported.

Below is a message sent to parents following the incident:

Dear Woodlawn High School Families,

This morning we received a tip that a weapon was brought onto campus. Law enforcement quickly handled the situation and confiscated the weapon. We have a zero tolerance policy towards weapons or actions that threaten the safety and security of our school, students and staff.

We are reviewing our security protocols to determine how we can prevent another situation like this from occurring. But we also need your partnership and support. Please help us have meaningful conversations about the dangers and consequences of bringing weapons or unsafe items to school. We are grateful to our school community for taking action and working to keep our campuses safe and secure for everyone. Thank you for your continued support and attention to this critical matter.
