‘Frasier’ reboot cancelled; CBS Studios buys a new home

Frasier has left the building.

Paramount+ has opted out of a third season of the rebooted sitcom Phrases. Debuting on October 12, 2023, this new incarnation of the Phrases followed Kelsey Grammer as psychiatrist Frasier Crane, who we originally met on Bowl in 1984, when he returned to Boston in hopes of a better relationship with his son, Frederick (Jack Cutmore-Scott), now a Boston firefighter. He takes a professorship at Harvard University and moves into Freddy’s apartment building as he embarks on his “third act”.

A total of 20 episodes of Phrases was produced for Paramount+. But producer CBS Studios remains committed to the series and plans to shop it to other outlets.

Second season of Phrases debuted on Paramount+ in September, with Patricia Heaton joining as Holly, a new love interest for Frasier. Peri Gilpin, reprising her role as Roz Doyle, was upgraded from guest star in season one to recurring in season two. And Phrases returned to Seattle in an episode with cameos from the original Phrases starring Dan Butler (Bulldog) and Edward Hibbert (Gil Chesterton).

Bebe Neuwirth also starred, reprising her role as Frasier’s ex-wife Lilith, who also first appeared on Bowl.

The Phrases the reboot also featured Nicholas Lyndhurst as Alan, Frasier’s old colleague turned college professor; Toks Olagundoye as Olivia, Alan’s colleague and head of the university’s psychology department; Jess Salgueiro as Eve, Frasier and Freddy’s neighbor; and Anders Keith as Frasier’s nephew, David.

Combined with Bowl and now the two versions of frasier, and Kelsey Grammer played the role for 484 episodes.
