Avalanche’s Cale Makar becomes fastest active defenseman to reach 100 goals

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar reached the 100-goal plateau this afternoon after he scored his 14th goal of the season against the Dallas Stars to tie the game at 2-2.

Makar becomes the fastest active defenseman in the National Hockey League to hit that mark. In NHL history, Makar becomes the sixth fastest NHL defenseman to reach the mark behind Hall of Famers George Boucher, Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey, Ray Bourque and Denis Potvin.

Makar currently leads all defensemen in points with 14 goals and 37 assists for 51 points in 47 games this season. Makar scored 14 points in December 13 games and had his second two-goal game of the season in a 6–5 comeback win against the Buffalo Sabers on January 2.

Daily Faceoff’s midseason awards have Makar as one of the finalists for the Norris Trophy for the 2024-25 campaign.

The Calgary, Alberta native was named the NHL’s first star of the month for October when he had 19 points in 11 games to become the second defenseman in NHL history with a season-opening point streak of at least 11 games.

Last season, Makar became the second-fastest defenseman in NHL history to reach 300 career points. Makar accomplished the feat in 280 career games, just one shy of Bobby Orr.

In 362 career regular season games, Makar has scored 100 goals and 287 assists for 387 points. Makar also tallied 80 points in 72 postseason games and earned the Conn Smythe Trophy when the Avs won the 2022 Stanley Cup.

The No. 4 overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft spent two seasons dominating NCAA hockey with UMass-Amherst, finishing with 16 goals and 33 assists for 49 points in 41 games, winning the Hobey Baker Award for the nation’s top player during the 2018-19 campaign.
