‘This is the one we’ve been waiting for’

Detroit — Devin Booker’s top priority on Saturday will be getting his Phoenix Suns to a win over the Detroit Pistons.

The Suns are 20-20 heading into their matchup against the Pistons at Little Caesars Arena, far from the championship expectations they had during the season.

Regardless of the outcome against the Pistons, Booker confirmed to The Detroit News that he plans to attend Detroit Lions‘ Divisional Round game against the Washington Commanders at Ford Field. As a Grand Rapids native and lifelong Lions fan, Booker is hoping for a championship.

“We’ve seen success in all the other franchises, but this is the one we’ve been waiting for,” Booker told The Detroit News before Saturday’s game. “A culture is being built that matches this city. It’s been a fun team to rally behind.”

When the Lions-Commanders game time was announced as 20:00 Saturday, the Pistons game was moved up and the hour to 4 p.m., allowing a window for Booker, a Lions fan, and teammate Kevin Durant, a Maryland native and Commanders fan, to get to the game less than a mile away at Ford Field.

The two indicated that they would possibly take part in a friendly effort on their favorite team.

With a 15-2 record, the Lions had their most successful season in franchise history. They earned no. 1 seed for the playoffs and a bye in the first round. For the second year in a row, they are favored to advance to the NFC Championship game.

Quarterback Jared Goff led the Lions’ high-powered offense by throwing for 4,629 yards and 37 touchdowns. All-Pro wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown notched his fourth consecutive 1,000-yard receiving season, finishing with 1,263 yards on 115 catches and 17 touchdowns.

“It’s important not only for the city, but for kids who grew up on the west side of the state,” Booker said. “Loving and rooting for my team.”
