New Jersey braced for a significant snowfall Sunday, with total accumulations of 5 to 9 inches expected in the northern part of the state.

The snow began falling in the early afternoon and will become heavier into the evening, the National Weather Service said.

Evening snowfall could be between 2 and 4 inches, according to the weather service, depending on where you live. Lower temperatures will be around 17 degrees, with wind chill values ​​between 5 and 15 degrees. A northwest wind will be 11 to 14 mph with gusts as high as 26 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100%.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Monday for northeastern New Jersey, parts of southern Connecticut and southeastern New York. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slippery and dangerous. Plan on slippery road conditions.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the 20s Sunday night and will remain bitterly cold through most of the week, dropping into the double-digit lows, with wind chill values ​​likely below zero Monday and Tuesday night.
