Explanation of the new types of cold weather advisories

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — As dangerously cold temperatures are in the forecast next weekThe National Weather Service will likely issue weather advisories associated with this extreme cold weather.

However, there have been some criteria changes due to previous climate data and social science. The NWS Hazard Simplification Project makes warnings more straightforward and less complex.

When it comes to cold weather, the NWS has eliminated wind chill advisories, watches and warnings. These will be replaced by either an extreme cold watch, extreme cold warning or cold weather.

For one Cold weather advisoryair temperatures or wind chill values ​​should be 5° to -4°.

For one Extreme Cold Watchair temperatures or wind chill values ​​are expected to be -4° or colder.

For one Extreme cold warningair temperatures or wind chill values ​​must be -4° or colder.

As we look to next week’s significant cold air event, WKRN News 2 Meteorologists predict that most of Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky will be under a Cold Weather Advisory as feel-like temperatures could drop below freezing and air temperatures remain mainly near/above 5° for most areas.
