Ohio State heritage jerseys, explained

Through the first three rounds of the CFP, the Buckeyes have worn their regular uniforms, competing in scarlet against Tennessee, traditional away uniforms against Oregon and traditional home uniforms against Texas in the semifinals.

This will be the first time Ohio State has worn the “Heritage Stripes” uniforms, white jerseys with gray sleeves and a gray helmet, since its 2022 CFP Peach Bowl semifinal loss to Georgia in Atlanta.

The uniforms are a tribute to the 1968 National Championship team and were first worn during the 2014 National Championship run. That season, the Buckeyes defeated Alabama, 42-35, in the Sugar Bowl, the national semifinal game.

Interestingly, the Buckeyes were scheduled to wear the uniforms for the rivalry game against Michigan, but instead shelved them for the playoffs. It’s a move that seems to have paid off.

“We probably would have just been in a traditional stripe for the playoffs,” Kevin Ries, OSU’s director of football equipment, told the Dispatch in 2022. “We never would have thought about pushing it as a championship uniform. And then we had that run. “

Ohio State primarily wore the “Heritage Stripe” colors during the 1944-56, 1967-78 and 1988-2005 seasons, which included national championships in 1954, 1968, 1970 and 2002.
