Kirk Herbstreit, a former Centerville High School and Ohio State commit Buckeyes The quarterback and self-proclaimed die-hard Cincinnati Reds fan was emotional on air during ESPN’s postgame coverage of OSU’s 34-23 CFP national championship victory Monday night against Notre Dame.

Herbstreit insisted when he and Chris Fowler spoke with ESPN anchor Scott Van Pelt that he makes every effort to be objective when calling Ohio State games. But he acknowledged his friendship with Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day and that he couldn’t help but cry when discussing the Buckeyes’ first national title since 2014.

Herbstreit said he called the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday night game against the Baltimore Ravens for Amazon Prime Video with a heavy heart after his dog, Ben, died after a battle with cancer.
