Originally, it sounded like the halftime show would feature one of the best things about sports: marching bands. This is the typical expectation for a college football game. The home team’s band usually performs a set. At neutral site games, both bands can sometimes play. Monday’s national championship could still feature the Ohio State and Notre Dame marching bands, but there was a late announcement about the halftime entertainment.

On Monday morning, ESPN and Travis Scott both tweeted that the rapper would be included in the halftime show, where Scott debuted a new song, “4×4.”

Is there a halftime show during the College Football Playoff championship game?

Yes, but it will have a different feel than a typical halftime show fans are used to seeing during Super Bowls and other big events. In college football, there is a long tradition of school marching bands performing at halftime.

Both Notre Dame and Ohio State were recognized for wearing one of the eight featured marching bands US News and World Report. It is expected that both will be involved.

However, the headliner for the show is rumored to be rapper Travis Scott. He will debut a new song, “4×4.”

ESPN teased the surprise appearance as part of a January 16 press release:

“Halftime of ESPN’s presentation features a special guest who will make an unforgettable performance. Fans will not want to miss this.”

Scott has previously been part of a football halftime show. He was a guest at Maroon 5’s Super Bowl halftime show in 2019. It started with a tribute to ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ and the iconic “Sweet Victory” show from the cartoon. It then became Scott’s ‘Sicko Mode’.

He used marching bands during that halftime show and was able to feature the Ohio State and Notre Dame marching bands again Monday night.

It is unclear if Scott will perform on stage at Mercedes-Benz Stadium or if the performance was filmed off-site.

Before kickoff, Grammy Award winner Coco Jones will perform “The Star-Spangled Banner.” She will accompany award-winning musician, composer and arranger Adam Blackstone.

Before the National Anthem, the Spelman College Glee Club will perform “America the Beautiful.”
