Inauguration Day Forecast: Slight chance of snow showers early Monday

As the Washington, DC region prepares for the influx of people arriving for Inauguration Day and the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend, wet weather could complicate plans. The forecast indicates potential rain showers that could affect outdoor events and ceremonies Saturday and Sunday, with a slight chance of snow showers early Monday morning.

Here is the forecast:

Friday DC Weather Forecast

Temperatures will slowly cool back into the mid 30s as we head into the night hours with clouds slowly filtering in. The wind will be on the calmer side, mostly from the south.

Saturday DC weather forecast

What we know:

A cool and dry start gives way to our next weather system moving into the afternoon hours. Rain is expected to start around the afternoon with highs reaching the mid to upper 40s. Winds will again be mostly out of the southwest at around 8-12 mph. Rainfall totals will be about one-tenth and one-quarter inch.

The rain tapers off at midnight and cloud cover lingers through the night. Lows will be in the mid 30s with winds changing to a northerly breeze.

Sunday DC Weather Forecast

Big picture:

Another chance of wet weather moves into the area, especially in the afternoon hours. Temperatures will hover around the low 40s and upper 30s with winds still out of the north, boosting some of the cooler air.

This could make the type of precipitation difficult as we could start to see some snow mixing with the rain. Models have flipped back and forth on whether the second weekend system will have enough cold air at the surface to allow for snow, but they agree that another system will form and bring in some form of precipitation. We’ll be keeping a close eye on how this second system develops in the coming days.

Lingering snow showers continue to linger as the system slowly drifts off to the northeast, leaving cool air behind. Lows are expected to remain in the mid to upper 20s.

Weather forecast for inauguration day

By the numbers:

A slight chance of snow showers is still possible with this exciting system. Temperatures at the presidential inauguration around noon will be in the upper 20s with winds again out of the northwest around 6-12 mph. Wind chill values will hover around the upper 10s and low 20s. Be sure to bundle up if attending outdoor events or the dedication ceremony as frostbite may occur after 30 minutes of exposure.
