North Carolina mountain schools change schedules Jan. 8 due to icy roads

WATAUGA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) – Temperatures in the teens and some snowy and icy roads have forced several school districts in the North Carolina mountains to change their schedules on Wednesday, January 7th.

Officials in Ashe and Watauga counties said students will have a distance learning day Wednesday, while those in Avery County will have a three-hour delay. Alleghany County schools will be closed.

The second half of the week will remain cold across the Carolinas before a chance for more snow moves in Friday night into Saturday.

In Charlotte, high temperatures won’t reach the mid-40s until Wednesday before dropping to near 40 degrees Thursday and Friday. There is a chance of a wintry mix Friday through Saturday. Morning lows will be cold with lows in the 20s almost every day this week.

Towards the mountains, Wednesday will top out in the 20s in places with morning temperatures in the teens. The wintry mix the Charlotte area could see will be mostly snow farther north and west.
