Republican Rep. Nancy Mace threatens Democrat Jasmine Crockett after a heated exchange

Republican Representative Nancy Mace and Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett had a heated exchange during a Meeting of the House Oversight Committee in Washington DC on Tuesday 14 January.

The argument arose when Crockett, a representative from Texas, introduced an amendment to reinstate previously dissolved Oversight Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.

According to The New RepublicCrockett introduced his amendment shortly after the House of Representatives voted to pass HR 28, “Act on the Protection of Women and Girls in Sport,” which prevents biological males from competing against biological females in women’s sports.

After Crockett made her motion, Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury gave her time and Crockett began calling out Mace, a representative from South Carolina.

“I can see that somebody’s campaign coffers are really struggling right now, so she keeps saying ‘trans, trans, trans,’ so people will feel threatened,” Crockett said.

Crockett continued, “And child, listen,” at which point Mace cut her off.

“I’m no kid. Don’t call me a kid. I’m no kid. Don’t even start. I’m a grown woman. I’m 47 years old. I’ve broken more glass ceilings than you ever have,” Mace da Crockett said , 43, reiterated that she “wasted my time.”

“You won’t. I’m not a kid. I’m not a kid. If you want to take it outside, we can,” Mace said in response.

After Chairman of the house’s oversight committee James Comer repeatedly struck his gavel to call the session to order, Florida Rep. Maxwell Frost motioned to knock Mace’s “take it outside” remark off the post. Comer later denied this request after ruling that Mace did not challenge Crockett to a fight, per The hill.

Crockett spoke after the incident on her personal X accountwrites, “(Mace is) an attention-seeking loser who clearly has some fundraising goals to achieve… and to be clear that’s all she wants to hit…”

Crockett’s the state’s X account echoing similar sentiments, sharing alongside a clip from the meeting: “My Republican colleague threatened to physically fight me about it. Bless her heart.”

Mace has defended himself by writing on her professional account on X that she did not seek to fight Crockett.

“I’m not a kid. And if I wanted a physical fight, you’d know it. That’s not what this was about,” she wrote. “I’m not going to be bullied by someone who wants to take away women’s rights while they’re lecturing about civil rights. I’m not going to be bullied by someone who thinks it’s a ‘fantasy’ to be afraid of rape. This is not political, it’s personal.”

In one follow-up statementMace echoed the same sentiments: “Let me be clear: I wanted to take the conversation off the floor to have a more constructive conversation, not to fight. At no point was there any intent to hurt anyone.”
