Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2025: Here’s what’s open, closed in NYC on Monday

STATEN ISLAND, NY — On Monday, January 20, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The federal holiday, observed annually on the third Monday in January, commemorates the birthday of King, the slain civil rights activist, who would have turned 96 in 2025.

It is known as a day for the nation to recognize the importance of the civil rights movement. It is also a time to reflect on the fight against hatred and injustice that continues today.

Staten Island Railway: Normal weekday schedule

Buses: Buses will run according to a changed weekday schedule, with special timetables for some express bus routes. VisitMTA.infoMTA app or TrainTime app for real-time updates.

Staten Island Advance: The advance offices are closed, but the newspaper is published.

Banks: Mostly closed.

Financial markets: Closed

Government offices: Federal, state and city offices are closed.

Courts: Closed

US Post Offices: Closed

Sanitation: No waste collection, no recycling, no organic collection and no street cleaning.

Residents who normally receive Monday garbage, composting or recycling collection should place their material at the curb on Monday evening for collection beginning Tuesday, January 21.

Please be aware that residents may experience delays in collection, as there may be a backlog of material.

Schools: Closed

City parking: Alternative rules for side parking are suspended. Parking meter is in force.
