Martin Luther King Jr. Day is around the corner. Every year, America takes a day to honor one of the most important voices in the Civil Rights Movement.

MLK Day celebrates King’s contributions to various communities across the country. On MLK Day—and every day—individuals are encouraged to reflect on the progress and ongoing work necessary to achieve King’s dream of a fair and just society.

Since MLK Day is a federal holiday, many businesses and services will be closed or suspended for the day. It never hurts to call your favorite local store and ask what their hours will be.

Here’s what we know.

When is MLK Day?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated on the third Monday in January each year. This year the public holiday falls on Monday 20 January, which also happens to be Inauguration Day.

Will mail be delivered on MLK Day?

According to US Postal ServiceThe post offices are closed on Monday. Other delivery services, such as FedEx and UPS, will be operating.

Are banks open on MLK Day?

On January 20, 2025 Federal Reserve Banks will be closed and virtual transactions will not be sent.

Wells Fargo, Chase, Capital One, Bank of America and Citibank branches will be closed on the federal holiday.

Are schools open on MLK Day?

In Arizona, public schools are required to close on MLK Day.

Classes will not be held on Monday at all three of Arizona’s public universities, the University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University and Arizona State University.

The Maricopa Community College District will also have the day off.

Are retail stores and restaurants open on MLK Day?

Most major US retailers and grocers, such as Costco, Walmart and Target, will be open on the federal holiday. Fry’s in Arizona will also operate during normal business hours on Monday, according to its website.

Most businesses will remain open, but some may have changed hours, so it’s always best to check with your local restaurant or retailer.

Is the stock market open on MLK Day?

No, the US stock market will be closed, according to NASDAQ.

All New York Stock Exchange markets observe US holidays and will also close on Monday.

Are federal offices open on MLK Day?

According to US Office of Personnel Managementfederal offices will be closed.
