There is one final game of the 2024 college football season, with a national champion soon to be crowned.

No. 7 Notre Dame and No. 8 Ohio State meets for the national title on Monday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, home of the SEC championship game, the Peach Bowl and the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons.

The 7 seed Fighting Irish (14-1) reached this stage of the season with impressive wins in their last three games. They defeated No. 10 Indiana 27-17 at home in the opening round of the College Football Playoff before downing No. 2 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl quarterfinals in New Orleans. Notre Dame punched its ticket to the CFP Championship with a 27-24 win over No. 6 Penn State in the Orange Bowl semifinals.

Meanwhile Buckeyes (13-2), which fell to archrival Michigan in the regular-season finale, has plowed through the CFP with double-digit wins over No. 9 Tennessee, no. 1 Oregon and no. 5 Texas so far.

An Ohio State win on Monday would mark not only the Buckeyes’ first national championship since the 2014 college football season, but also the first in the Ryan Day era — perhaps allaying some anxiety about Day’s 1-4 record against the Wolverines. The Fighting Irish, meanwhile, are playing in their first title game since the 2013 BCS championship and are looking for the first national title since the 1988 season.

CFP National Championship Predictions, Picks, Odds

Odds provided by BetMGM from Friday 17 January

  • Spread: Ohio State (-8.5)
  • Above/below: 46.5
  • Money line: Ohio State -350 | Notre Dame +280

Here are predictions for the game:

  • Joey Kaufman, Columbus Post Dispatch:It’s hard not to take Ohio State. I like the Buckeyes by two points. Too many weapons on offense, especially at wide receiver. The defense does not give much at all. It feels like the team is on a mission. But the Irish held them to 17 and 21 points in their last two meetings, so moving the ball won’t be easy.
  • Mike Berardino, South Bend Tribune:I pick Notre Dame 33-27 in double overtime. Seam Riley Leonard say, culture wins.
  • Matt Hayes, USA TODAY Network:Ohio State, but after what Notre Dame has produced in the playoffs — winning games with solid defense and smart football — I wouldn’t be shocked in the least if the Irish win.
